Romania: Small hydropower plant, high potential
“Considering the objectives set by the EU in terms of energy and climate for 2020, 2030 and 2050, we can say that these investments represent an important, long-term support for Romania”, says representatives from the project.
The project will deliver clean and renewable hydroelectricity and will contribute to the reduction of Green House Gases (GHG) emission, by replacing/displacing the need for electricity from conventional sources.
The CEZ Group was awarded funding from the EEA and Norway Grants Programme on Energy in Romania, through an open call on hydropower.
The project is a small hydropower scheme on the Bârzava river, in the Văliug dam area. It aims to increase renewable energy production by building a powerhouse with a Francis water turbine and generator on one of the two bottom drainage pipes of the Văliug Dam - Bârzava River. The project will enable the installation and commissioning of additional power output for the existing Văliug hydropower reservoir. The investment aims to create a portfolio of energy capacities to maximise the water evacuated through the bottom drainage of the Văliug dam.
The new hydropower plant is estimated to produce electricity of approximately 2.500 MWh annually.

- Estimated annual CO2 emissions reductions (in tonnes CO2 eq./year): 770 tonnes of CO2eq/year
