Romania: Greening of the public lights in Buteni

The project was started with an energy audit on the public lightening system – on the streets, on each pole, highlighting the quantities and types of existing poles, on the status of the existing lighting devices, the power and the state of the sources of lights used. The audit found deficiencies. Buteni Commune Hall applied for a grant to the Energy Programme in Romania.

With funding from the EEA and Norway Grants, Buteni is reducing electricity consumption of CO2 emissions, modernise the lighting system through LED technology and decrease electricity consumption.

The project has optimised the programme of the public lighting system and decreased the expenses of it. The project also includes the acquisition and installation of the dimming / remote management system that allows the regulation of the luminous flux. The public lighting now complies with quantitative and qualitative European standards.

Improvements for the citizens

The new public lights system improves the security, safety and comfort of citizens. The system uses ecological materials for environmental protection and contributes to the sustainable development of Buteni.

Project results

• Reduction of energy consumption: 128 MWh per year
• CO2 equivalent emission reduction per year: 39.06 tonnes
• Annual monetary saving from energy efficiency measures: 18,682.25 euro
