Romania: Green energy for public buildings
With funding from the Energy Programme in Romania, as part of the EEA and Norway Grants, Ghiroda commune is installing photovoltaic renewable energy sources on eight of its public buildings. The use of solar energy will reduce emissions and lower the pollution levels.

Cooperation with Sogndal in Norway
Western Norway Research Institute and Politehnica University of Timisoara are both partners in the project. Western Norway Research Institute (Vestlandsforskning) will ensure that the project contribute directly to CO2 emission reductions and to electric energy production from renewable sources of energy, through the implementation of solar energy.
The Norwegian partner will conduct a life cycle assessment to analyse the environmental performance of the systems and consider possible trade-offs between the product life cycle phases and between environmental harms.
How did the partners find each other?
Ghiroda Town Hall applied to Innovation Norway and received a travel grant through the Energy Programme. Travel grants are offered so that partners can meet and explore whether to apply for a project together.
Representatives from Ghiroda travelled to meet Western Norway Research Institute in Oslo and Sogndal in January 2019. The meetings lay the foundations for the project.
Expected results of the project
- estimated annual CO2 emission reduction: 19.8 tones CO2 / year
- estimated electrical energy production/year: 66 MWh/year
- estimated installed capacity of the system: 49 Kwp
